5 Signs Your Compressed Air Dryer Isn’t Working Properly

Your air compressor may be performing perfectly, but if the air leaving your system isn’t being properly dried, moisture can quickly become a problem.

Compressed air naturally contains water vapour. As that air cools, moisture condenses within the system. A correctly operating air dryer helps remove this moisture before it reaches your pipework, pneumatic equipment and production processes.

But how do you know when your dryer isn’t performing as it should?

Here are five common warning signs to look out for.

1. Water Appearing in Your Air Lines

One of the clearest warning signs is visible water coming from airlines, tools or points of use.

While some condensate within a compressed air system is normal, your air treatment equipment should prevent excessive moisture from travelling downstream.

If you’re regularly draining water from areas where it shouldn’t be present, your dryer may need attention.

2. Pneumatic Equipment Is Corroding

Moisture travelling through your compressed air network can contribute to corrosion inside pipework, valves, cylinders and pneumatic tools.

Over time, this can increase maintenance requirements and shorten equipment life.

Finding rust or corrosion downstream of your air treatment equipment can therefore indicate that air quality needs to be investigated.

3. Your Dryer Is Running Constantly or Struggling

Like your compressor, an air dryer should be correctly sized for the demand placed upon it.

Changes to production, additional equipment or increased compressed air consumption can mean an existing dryer is no longer suitable for the volume of air passing through the system.

The compressor itself may have enough capacity while the air treatment equipment becomes the bottleneck.

4. Condensate Drains Aren’t Working Properly

Removing moisture doesn’t end with the dryer.

Condensate drains play an important role in removing collected water from receivers, filters and other parts of the compressed air system.

Blocked, damaged or poorly maintained drains can allow water to accumulate and eventually travel further into your system.

Regular inspection of your condensate management equipment should therefore form part of routine compressed air maintenance.

5. Product or Process Quality Is Being Affected

For some businesses, compressed air comes into direct or indirect contact with products and processes.

Excess moisture can cause problems with applications such as painting, instrumentation, packaging and manufacturing, while industries with stricter air-quality requirements may require particularly careful control of moisture, oil and particulates.

If unexplained quality issues are appearing within a process that uses compressed air, checking the condition and performance of your air treatment system is a sensible place to start.
